31-year-old American swimmer Michael Phelps, who quit the sport after the 2012 Olympic Games, produced a vintage performance on Sunday
to claim an astonishing 19th Olympic gold medal of his career after
helping his fellow American swimmers win Gold in the 4 x 100 relay
event.
In front of a raucous crowd that had already witnessed three broken world records earlier Sunday night, the U.S. men earned an unexpected gold in their first Olympic relay of Rio 2016.

Phelps,
who produced a stunning second leg, has now won 23 medals in total,
extending his record as the most decorated Olympian of all time.
Michael Phelps was selected as the U.S. Olympic team’s flag bearer at the Games’ opening ceremony.
